Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for The Tragically Hip
Version 1.0
March 5, 1999 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
This began as an attempt to update a FAQ not updated since
February 28, 1995
but soon became a new work in its self. Trevor Astrope
<astrope@e-corp.net>
started the original FAQ and should be commended for his efforts.
Due to the nature of time, it's inevitable that this page will find itself
out of date from time to time. Feel free to e-mail me with a reminder to
work on it. I have tried to be as accurate as possible. Hopefully I have.

At the current time there is no permanent archive site for this file.

The entire band hails from Kingston, Ontario, Canada. All of the members, with
the exception of Johnny Fay attended Kingston's Queen's University. Kingston is
a few hours from Toronto, ON.
The band
acquired there name from Michael Nesmith's "Elephant Parts" video. The
video contained a clip asking for contributions to The Foundation for The
Tragically Hip: poor, afflicted people in need of jacuzzis, Lamborghinis and
cocaine.
Camp Trillium is a service for kids with cancer. The band have done several
concerts for Camp Trillium and will undoubtedly do plenty more. For

The
Tragically Hip have a video named "Heksenketel". The video focuses on

Kings, Courage, Blow at
High Dough, Fully Completely, and Eldorado.
Despite what you may have heard, this song is fictional. While similar
events may have occured (eg. Kingston penitentiary break-out) neither Gordon
Downie or any of the other bandmates were related to the convicts.
The line "drop a caribou" is a reference to a paying for a telephone call.
In the band's native Canada, payphones cost a quarter, and the common
Canadian quarter depicts a Caribou.
6.3 "Courage (for Hugh MacLennan)"
Hugh MacLennan is a Canadian novelist, who has written a number of books,
and who died in 1990. One of the lyrics in the song is quite similar to his
novel, "The Watch That Ends The Night"
This song is about David Millgard, a man wrongfully accused of murder. Millgard
spent twenty years in prison for this crime. When finally freed from his wrongful
imprisonment he commented on his desire to see the Wheat Kings (a minor-league
hockey team) play hockey.
